Course Description

This course will indrouce the exciting new science being done at South Pole in the AMANDA project (Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector Array). This ongoing experiment uses sensitive light detectors in the polar ice cap to track sub-atomic particles as they pass through the ice. Simple experiments will be presented which illustrate the operation of this incredible detector and the bassic concepts of the many fascinating phenomena it will explore. The course will focus on concepts of the many fascinating phenomena it will explore. The course will focus on provideing a coherent introduction to the physics necessary to effectively utilize the experiments in the classroom. Topics to be covered include: Particle Physics, Neutrino Physics, Detector Simulation, Probablility and Chance, and Neutrino Detective Work. The instructor and others from the AMANDA project will be available for classroom vists and for ongoing support during the subsequent school year.
